Analytics Engineer (Remote)

18th November 2021

Tasman is defining the future of Data Science As A Service. We are a young, fast-growing company funded fully by analytics & data science work for our ambitious clients. As we take on an increasing client load, we are committed to continue serving each client to a consistently high level of quality and value.

We are hiring an Analytics Engineer to join our team to help us:

  • Design datasets for use in business analytics, reporting, and data science, including:
    • Design and specify the data structures which represent business events and information
    • Facilitate discussion and agreement on the detailed business logic rules to be applied to business data
    • Facilitate discussion and agreement on the mathematical definitions of business measures
  • Develop data transformations in SQL to consolidate data sources into suitable structure for visualisation and exploration by analysts and business decision-makers
  • Develop and refine business domain models (entity-relationship) with business stakeholders
  • Articulate the detailed business value and acceptance criteria for the development of specific dashboards, explorations and reports

We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply. Each new hire is an opportunity for us to bring in a different perspective, and we are always eager to further diversify our company. Tasman has an open, flat and teamwork-centered culture and is committed to building an inclusive, supportive place for you to do the best and most rewarding work of your career. We are also prepared to invest in the career development of prospective hires who show strong aptitude and enthusiasm for the role, but whose prior work experience may differ from the role description.

Tasman was founded in 2017 with a mission to help companies improve their decision-making with access to better, more meaningful, and more reliable data. Both our client base and our team are rapidly growing. We work with our clients to consolidate their various data sources onto a common platform designed to meet their specific needs for answers and insights. We provide end-to-end support for strategy, technical implementation, data science & data analysis, and also help our clients hire and onboard an internal data team.

We’ve worked hand-in-hand with over 30 fast-growing companies in a range of industries. Some examples of the work we did: we’ve helped Lifecake to build a product for sharing childhood memories with family; Kaia Health to combine physical, psychological and educational expertise to tackle chronic diseases; and Asana Rebel in supporting those who want to get fit and start a healthy lifestyle. Other clients include Bleach London, The Business of Fashion, The Collective, Flash Pack, Marco Polo Learning, Gousto, RIXO, ResQ Club, Readdle, Pollen, Ecosia, and Curio.

In a typical client engagement, Tasman teams work with client stakeholders through iterative sprints defining and building new and improved data capabilities. Over the course of an engagement, often lasting multiple months, we deliver a sophisticated data platform as we accelerate clients towards data maturity. Through that time, we collaborate heavily with the tech & business teams within the client organisation; different members of the Tasman team will be involved in sprints as the needs of the client dictate the type of work. This means that teamwork is a crucial part of the job.

This is a remote job. You’re free to work where you work best: home office, co-working space, coffeeshops. Whilst we currently have co-working spaces in London and Stockholm and will soon get one in Amsterdam, you should be comfortable working remotely—we all do some or most of the time!

Data platform

The Data Platform team is responsible for data collection, extraction and modeling. You’ll join this team, reporting directly to one of our co-founders, Christophe Bogaert. You’ll also work closely with  our CTO, the other teams at Tasman, and our clients.

As a member of the Data Platform team, you’ll get to work with a broad variety of data generating and reporting systems that cover the full spectrum of business functions. We gather data from user interaction trackers such as Segment and Snowplow, marketing platforms such as Google Ads and Facebook, CRM platforms such as Salesforce and Hubspot, ecommerce platforms such as Shopify, subscription platforms such as RevenueCat, etc., as well as business data sources developed internally by our clients. We consolidate this data into a unified end-to-end view of the business, which we deliver to business decision-makers through data visualisation and exploration tools such as Looker or Metabase.

Data modeling

Your role will be to ensure that data is presented to decision-makers in a form they expect and understand. Key to this is ensuring that all transformations and calculations align with their business understanding and account for corner cases, exceptions, and outliers. You will be responsible for producing specifications that are logically correct and complete.

We design, implement, document, and maintain a wide range of SQL data models for our clients. These models integrate data from all different sources and generate clean, structured and interpreted data sets that are ready for consumption by the business or by the other data functions. We run these models on cloud-native data warehouses (BigQuery, Redshift, and Snowflake) and we use a new generation of data build tools like Dataform and dbt (managed or open source) to bring a number of best practices from software engineering to data modeling.

  • Work with our clients to ensure that their expectations for the data contained in dashboards, explorations, and reports are accurately captured and correctly implemented in the work we deliver
  • Work with Tasman data analysts and data scientists to design datasets that can be used to answer novel and complex business questions.
  • Specify requirements for dataset business logic that allow data engineers to make accurate estimates of implementation effort
  • Design and develop SQL data models that deliver clean, well-structured data to visualisation, exploration, and reporting tools
  • Work with a wide variety of different clients and help them solve their most pressing data challenges
  • Work with clients to develop an explicit end-to-end domain model of their business to inform  data modeling and presentation work
  • Work with internal teams at our clients to transfer skills and help them develop data self-sufficiency

  • Comfortable with relational data modeling for business analytics, mapping business reporting requirements to table structures
  • Conscientious and detail-oriented in specifying business logic rules and calculations
  • Comfortable discussing and building consensus with business decision-makers regarding the expected output results to be reported for the foreseeable range of possible business data inputs
  • Able to write clean, maintainable, and reliable SQL as part of a data transformation pipeline
  • Self-motivated and prefer to learn by doing, failing, and trying again, with a can-do attitude to learning new skills and new tools
  • A good communicator who is able to work directly with business analysts, data analysts, data scientists, engineers, product managers, marketers, and executive teams
  • A clear thinker who is comfortable explaining their thinking, discussing different approaches to a problem, and working collaboratively and creatively to identify new solutions
  • Able to prioritise effectively and deliver reliably across a number of concurrent workstreams for multiple clients at once
  • You might have a STEM degree. You might not. That’s not necessarily what we’re looking for. We care about what you can do and how you do it, not about how you got here. A strong track record of conscientious, thoughtful work speaks volumes.

  • A competitive package with share options (£45-75k based on experience)
  • 25 days holidays (on top of public holidays)
  • A latest generation MacBook Pro (or equivalent)
  • A flexible work environment offering good work-life balance
  • A budget for home office
  • A budget for professional development & training
  • Generous fitness, wellness, and refreshments allowances.

Please send an application that speaks directly to this position. Write a cover letter in which you address some of the work we do and tell us about your role in Tasman’s future (and Tasman’s role in yours) Keep it short and get across to us what matters to you. Clear communication is crucial in the work we do, and you should think of this as our first impression of you.

We will process applications on an ongoing basis which means there is no deadline. However, we will make an offer as soon as we find the right person for the role so don’t wait too long before applying! At this stage, regrettably, we are also not able to offer internships or visa sponsorships.

Expect us to take one or two weeks to review the application. We’ll let you know whether you’ve advanced to the next stage of the application process, which will be a phone screen. If that goes well, we’ll proceed to in-depth interviews with the founders and CTO, and a skills assessment.

We look forward to hearing from you!
