We built a scalable data platform for this women's healthcare provider using Snowflake, Fivetran, and Lightdash. Our team implemented proper event governance through Avo, created custom dashboards for user behaviour and marketing ROI analysis, and successfully transferred knowledge to Visana's internal team—enabling them to operate independently and make data-driven product decisions.

Overview

Visana Health is a digital health company dedicated to revolutionising women’s healthcare through an innovative online platform. Their goal is to provide accessible, affordable, and personalised health services for women, covering a wide range of needs from menstruation through menopause and everything in between.

Visana partnered with Tasman Analytics with the goal of moving away from loose collections of spreadsheets and ad-hoc queries towards a scalable data platform. This would enhance their understanding of user behaviour, optimise marketing efforts, and ensure that all insights were both actionable and aligned with their broader strategic objectives.

There were three project pillars – mapping to Tasman’s core services:

  1. Deploy a Modern Data Infrastructure: Creating a scalable data platform capable of handling large volumes of user data and integrating various data sources (such as CRM, app usage, and marketing tools) into a unified data warehouse.
  2. Deliver Data Insights: Developing customised dashboards and analytical tools to provide actionable insights on user engagement, retention, and acquisition strategies.
  3. Build Internal Capability: Facilitating a seamless handover and empowering Visana’s internal team to manage and expand the platform independently.

The Challenge

Why Data is Critical for Visana

For women’s healthprovider like Visana Health, data is not just a by-product of business activities; it is an essential asset that drives strategic decisions and growth. Digital health is competitive and a critical product in customer’s life — and therefore, understanding user behaviour is key to personalising services and improving user experience.

The insights we built allow Visana to tailor their offerings based on user needs, track the effectiveness of their product strategies, and rapidly adjust to changing market conditions — all while maintaining the utmost care and respect for user privacy. This data-driven approach ensures they can engage their audience effectively, optimise costs, and ultimately achieve higher user satisfaction and retention rates.

Challenges

Before this project, Visana Health faced several challenges:

  • Disorganised data with limited access to actionable insights, leading to slow and inefficient decision-making. Most reporting was done in a very manual way (either dependent on spreadsheets or on ad-hoc queries).
  • Inefficiencies in measuring and improving the effectiveness of their product design efforts (lacking easy ways to understand user journeys).
  • Lack of a modern, scalable data infrastructure that could support their growth and enable real-time data-driven strategies.

The Solutions

Data Platform Architecture

Designed and implemented a robust data platform using a technology stack featuring Snowflake as the data warehouse, Fivetran for data extraction and loading (ELT), and Lightdash for data visualisation. We also relied on Avo for proper event governance, and implemented Rudderstack as the customer data platform. This was all built to operate at scale with minimal involvement from the Visana team going forward.

Analytics and Reporting

Developed custom dashboards and reports to provide critical insights into user behaviour, acquisition costs, and marketing return on investment (ROI). This allowed Visana Health to optimise their marketing spend, identify high-value customers, and fine-tune their engagement strategies. We used Lightdash to rapidly prototype dashboards and reporting, getting valuable insights to the teams quickly.

Collaboration and Communication

Maintained a high level of engagement with the Visana Health team through regular sprint reviews, communication via Slack, and effective feedback loops. The approach of "over-communication" ensured transparency and kept all stakeholders well-informed of progress.

The Stack

Results

  • Enhanced Data Visibility: The new data platform provided a consolidated view of all user data, leading to improved visibility and more precise decision-making.
  • Improved Product Analytics: With better data insights, Visana was able to adjust their product strategies, improving funnels and understanding user journeys better.
  • Stronger Internal Capabilities: A successful knowledge transfer and handover process enabled Visana’s internal team to maintain and extend their data capabilities independently, reducing reliance on external consultants.

What did Visana say?

Scib Ebel, CTO of Visana Health, praised the project, stating:

“The project was very successful and a really good experience for us. Your team has been incredibly easy to work with, and I think the communication and camaraderie built between team members on both sides in such a short time was really great. I’d go back and do it again!”

The partnership between Tasman and Visana resulted in a marked improvement in their data capabilities, better decision-making, and more efficient product analytics. The project was completed on time and within budget, with a strong focus on empowering Visana’s internal team for sustained growth and success in the digital health sector.
